Tradeoff for something that works.
1030SW
Fuji F30
Durability for quality
photos from half of the day were practically worthless.
It was then I decided to just consider it broken and get me
a new camera. Something that would last through my summers of beach,
sand and sun, and my winters of snowboarding and crash landings. Answer, the Olympus Stylus 1030SW. Shockproof to withstand a 6ft drop and waterproof to 33ft under, this thing is designed to last. We shall see if it's Ricky-proof by this time next year.
But while playing around with the camera, I did see the trade-off I had made in quality. Compared to my old F30 and FX-01, this camera is noticeably duller. Also it seems to consistently underexpose a lot of shots. The night view mode doesn't seem to take in enough light either. But on the upside. It should still work and not let me down after I abuse it the way I do. And it does have a 28mm lens that I have missed since giving up the FX-01
See for yourself, Even in the resized images you can easily see that the F30 looks sharper and better. The Olympus at a setting or EV +0.7 still looks too dark and much softer. For you pixel-peepers out there hare are the full res pics.

Is there a manual setting to increase the aperture and reduce the shutter speed?
People are driving on the wrong side of the road.
Unfortunately nope. Very few manual controls. It doesn't even have a cutstom white balance. Just ISO, preset white balance, and EV are about it. I can't wait to try it out under water in Hawaii. :)
Funny thing is, sometimes I still drive on the wrong side here too.
do you still have your old camera? the dark spot may just be a speck of something that got stuck inside the camera.
Ricky-where are you? We miss your excellent stories/writing. Come back!!
How do you like the camera? I am looking for one now, and I think that I am going to get the Canon SD1100IS or the 770IS.
The Canons take much nicer pictures for sure. Their low-light abilities blow away mine. I have to fiddle with the scenes/settings to get gust the right shot. But as far as durability is concerned the Olympus is the way to go.
